Can new music be funny? The connection between music and psychology has long been scientifically appreciated, so perhaps the foreboding nature of new music is part of the reason it doesn’t get the exposure it deserves. But what if new classical music had a more upbeat tone?
Throughout Europe’s classical music scene, it’s unusual to find new works being performed, particularly at the well-known venues. But when new music is given the exposure it deserves, the underlying themes of the compositions are generally dark and atmospheric, heavy with meaning and symbolism.
But what if new classical music had a more upbeat tone? Supported by the AVL Cultural Foundation, the Styriarte Festival, embarked on a project entitled Gli scherzi (literally “jokes”) and asked six young composers to come up with a modern take on Schubert’s humorous Trout Quintet. In doing so, it asked them to answer the question, can new music be funny?
