Refraction
“Our goal was to create something sustainable that would give the AVL Cultural Foundation an immersive presence with various partners. Refraction was designed to adapt flexibly to different spaces and evolve through interactivity to not only break down boundaries, but to dissolve them completely.”
— Pia Pivec and Heiko Tischler, Bureau Twelve

The Austrian-based design studio Bureau Twelve, founded by Pia Pivec and Heiko Tischler, developed the light installation Refraction, commissioned by the AVL Cultural Foundation. The eleven light panels are an analytical examination and reinterpretation of a kaleidoscope subject, which originally served as a simple representation of the AVL Cultural Foundation and has now been rethought through the creative process of the installation. Movement, light and color become a symbol for the fusion of art, science and technology.
Based on a photographic and artistically processed image of a dancer, the flowing movement is strongly abstracted. Clear movements are transformed into dynamic stripes and are complemented by soothing color gradients. The art installation Refraction, inspired by the physical refraction of light, explores the possibilities that arise when boundaries begin to dissolve. The installation encourages reflection on the transformative power of innovation and creativity. It illustrates the AVL Cultural Foundation's guiding principle of promoting innovation and inspiration.
