Helmut List Hall: 20th Anniversary
In 2023, the Helmut List Halle celebrated its 20th anniversary. The event hall was ceremoniously opened as part of European Capital of Culture Graz in 2003.
The Capital of Culture acted as an important impetus for Graz's art and cultural landscape, which continues to have an impact till today. In addition to the Helmut List Hall, the House of Architecture, the children's museum FRida & freD, the Kunsthaus, the Literaturhaus and the Murinsel were opened in Graz in 2003. All of these institutions have been central to the local artistic and cultural scene for two decades now. To mark the anniversary, the Capital of Culture institutions joined forces once again and organized the cultural discussion series Spekulatius. Open discussions. From May to December 2023, discussants from various fields came together every month to facilitate an intensive exchange on currently relevant issues.
The panel discussion in the Helmut List Halle was entitled Spekulatius: Art & Technology. About Spaces and Interstices. Physicist Michael Doser from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), architect Marie Therese Harnoncourt-Fuchs and media artist Peter Kogler, moderated by Ute Baumhackl, discussed and speculated on central questions that arise at the intersection between art and technology: What (intermediate) spaces need to be opened up in the collaboration between these two fields? What new sources of inspiration can result from this? What opportunities, but also challenges, arise for the art and culture scene from the rapid development of artificial intelligence? A written statement by Beat Furrer, whose work opened the Helmut List Halle in September 2003, also served as an impetus for the discussion.
